Product Overview

Strength, toughness and weldability in one chrome-moly grade

AISI 4130 is a low-alloy steel with nominally 0.30% carbon, 1% chromium and 0.20% molybdenum. The moderate carbon level keeps the heat-affected zone tougher and less crack-sensitive than in 4140, so 4130 can be welded by TIG, MIG and SMAW processes with suitable pre-heat. At the same time its chrome-moly chemistry provides good hardenability, allowing bars to be normalized or quenched and tempered to a wide range of strength levels.

In the oil and gas industry, 4130 bars and forgings are widely used for wellhead and christmas-tree components, where they are quenched and tempered to controlled hardness of 22 HRC max for sour service per NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156. We supply 4130 round bars hot rolled, forged, peeled or bright, in annealed, normalized or Q&T condition, ultrasonically tested on request and backed by EN 10204 3.1 certificates.

  • Better weldability than 4140
  • Excellent strength-to-weight ratio
  • NACE MR0175 Q&T supply (22 HRC max)
  • Good toughness & fatigue resistance
  • Annealed, normalized or Q&T bars
  • UT tested & cut-to-length supply

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about AISI 4130 round bars

4130 has lower carbon (0.28–0.33%) and manganese than 4140, so it is easier to weld and less prone to heat-affected-zone cracking. Choose 4130 for welded assemblies and sour-service parts, and 4140 where maximum hardness and strength are needed.

Yes. We supply 4130 quenched and tempered bars with hardness controlled to 22 HRC maximum, as required by NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, together with hardness survey reports and EN 10204 3.1 certificates.

Thin sections can often be TIG welded without pre-heat, but thicker bars should be pre-heated to around 150–260°C. Use low-hydrogen filler metals and apply post-weld stress relieving or tempering for heavy sections and critical service.

The closest equivalents are EN 25CrMo4 (1.7218), JIS SCM430 and AFNOR 25CD4. These grades share a similar chromium-molybdenum chemistry and can usually be substituted after checking the governing specification.
