Product Overview

The high-strength fitting grade for supercritical steam service

ASTM A234 WP91 is a modified 9Cr-1Mo ferritic alloy steel micro-alloyed with vanadium (0.18–0.25%), niobium (0.06–0.10%) and nitrogen (0.03–0.07%). After normalizing and tempering, these elements form fine, stable carbonitride precipitates in a tempered martensitic matrix, giving WP91 a minimum tensile strength of 620 MPa and creep-rupture strength far above WP22. This allows thinner walls, lower weight and reduced thermal stresses in main steam and hot reheat piping operating up to about 600–650°C.

Because the properties of P91 depend on correct heat treatment, every WP91 fitting we supply is normalized at 1040–1080°C and tempered at 730–800°C, then hardness-checked before dispatch. We offer seamless and welded (WPW91) elbows, tees, reducers, caps and stub ends to ASME B16.9 / B16.28, with EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 certificates, IBR documentation and third-party inspection on request.

  • Controlled normalizing & tempering
  • 100% hardness check and PMI

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about A234 WP91 fittings

WP91 combines 9% chromium and 1% molybdenum with controlled additions of vanadium, niobium and nitrogen. After normalizing and tempering, these form fine carbonitride precipitates in a tempered martensite structure, giving 620 MPa minimum tensile strength and much higher creep strength than WP22.

WP91 fittings are normalized at 1040–1080°C (1900–1975°F) and tempered at 730–800°C (1350–1470°F). Correct heat treatment is critical to achieving the specified strength and hardness, and is documented on our test certificates.

WP91 fittings are limited to 248 HB maximum. Unusually low hardness can indicate incorrect heat treatment, so we check hardness on every fitting before dispatch.

WP91 is an ASME P-No. 15E material. Preheat of 200–250°C, controlled interpass temperature, cooling below the martensite finish temperature and PWHT typically at 730–775°C are required by ASME B31.1. Matching 9Cr-1Mo-V filler metal should be used.
