Product Overview

Why 4140 is the most versatile heat-treatable alloy bar

AISI 4140 is a low-alloy steel containing nominally 0.40% carbon, 1% chromium and 0.20% molybdenum. Chromium increases hardenability and wear resistance, while molybdenum improves depth of hardening, high-temperature strength and resistance to temper embrittlement. In the annealed condition 4140 machines readily; after oil quenching and tempering it develops an excellent combination of strength, ductility and impact toughness, and it responds well to flame, induction and nitride hardening for wear-resistant surfaces.

We supply 4140 round bars hot rolled, forged, peeled or bright, in annealed or pre-hardened & tempered condition (typically 28–32 HRC) as per ASTM A29, A322 and A434. Bars are ultrasonically tested on request, identified by heat number and accompanied by EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates. Saw cutting to size and heat treatment to customer hardness ranges are offered for quick, ready-to-machine supply.

  • Deep hardenability in large sections
  • High fatigue & torsional strength
  • Good machinability when annealed
  • Suitable for induction & nitride hardening
  • Pre-hardened 28–32 HRC bars in stock
  • UT tested & cut-to-length supply

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about AISI 4140 round bars

Pre-hardened (4140 HT) bars are quenched and tempered at the mill to about 28–32 HRC. They can be machined directly into finished parts without further heat treatment, saving time and avoiding distortion.

42CrMo4 (1.7225) and JIS SCM440 are close equivalents of AISI 4140. EN19 (BS 970 709M40) is also very similar but has slightly higher molybdenum. For most applications they are interchangeable, but check the drawing specification before substituting.

Yes, but with care. Because of its 0.40% carbon content, 4140 needs pre-heating (typically 200–300°C depending on section), low-hydrogen consumables, controlled cooling and post-weld stress relieving to avoid cracking.

Typical practice is hardening from about 840–870°C with an oil quench, followed by tempering between 400°C and 650°C to reach the required strength. Annealing at around 815–845°C followed by slow cooling gives the best machinability.
