Product Overview

Why A387 Grade 22 is trusted for reactors and hydrogen service

ASTM A387 Grade 22 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel plate containing nominally 2.25% chromium and 1% molybdenum. The higher alloy content gives better creep and rupture strength than Grades 11 and 12, together with good resistance to oxidation, sulphidation and high-temperature hydrogen attack. The grade is widely used in welded pressure vessels operating up to about 600°C (1110°F), depending on the design code.

Grade 22 is available as Class 1 (205 MPa minimum yield) and the higher-strength Class 2 (310 MPa minimum yield). Plates are supplied annealed, or normalized and tempered, with a minimum tempering temperature of 675°C (1250°F). For heavy-wall reactor service we can supply plates with simulated PWHT, impact testing and step-cooling requirements as specified. Every plate is supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate, and third-party inspection can be arranged on request.

  • Higher creep strength than Gr 11 / Gr 12
  • Excellent resistance to hydrogen attack
  • Class 1 & Class 2 from ready stock
  • UT per ASTM A435 / A578 on request
  • Simulated PWHT & impact testing available
  • Profile, plasma & gas cutting to drawing

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about A387 Grade 22 plates

Grade 22 contains 2.00–2.50% chromium, 0.90–1.10% molybdenum, 0.05–0.15% carbon and 0.50% maximum silicon. It is commonly called 2¼Cr-1Mo steel.

Both classes have the same chemistry. Class 1 requires 415–585 MPa tensile and 205 MPa minimum yield. Class 2 is heat treated to 515–690 MPa tensile and 310 MPa minimum yield, so thinner sections can be used at the same design pressure.

Its 2.25% chromium and 1% molybdenum form stable carbides that resist high-temperature hydrogen attack. For this reason, Grade 22 is a standard choice for hydrocracker and hydrotreater reactors designed to API RP 941 guidance.

The closest equivalent is EN 10028-2 10CrMo9-10 (1.7380). The chemistry is similar, but the mechanical requirements differ, so substitution should be approved under the applicable design code.
