Product Overview

Why A182 F11 is the most widely used chrome-moly forging grade

ASTM A182 F11 is a low-alloy ferritic forging grade containing nominally 1.25% chromium and 0.5% molybdenum. Chromium provides resistance to oxidation and sulphidation, while molybdenum improves strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures up to about 595°C (1100°F). The specification offers three strength levels – Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 – with Class 2 being the most commonly specified for ASME B16.11 socket weld and threaded fittings.

Our F11 forged fittings are closed-die forged, CNC machined and then annealed or normalized and tempered at a minimum of 620°C (1150°F) as required by ASTM A182. Every piece is hardness tested, PMI verified and marked with grade, class, size and heat number for full traceability. Supply is backed by EN 10204 3.1 certificates, IBR documentation and third-party inspection when required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about A182 F11 forged fittings

All three classes contain 1.00–1.50% Cr and 0.44–0.65% Mo. Class 1 has lower carbon (0.05–0.15%) and a minimum tensile of 415 MPa, while Class 2 and Class 3 have 0.10–0.20% carbon and minimum tensile strengths of 485 MPa and 515 MPa respectively.

F11 Class 2 is the most commonly specified class for socket weld and threaded fittings, as it pairs well with A335 P11 pipe. Class 1 and Class 3 are supplied when the project specification calls for them.

ASTM A182 requires F11 forgings to be annealed, or normalized and tempered with a minimum tempering temperature of 620°C (1150°F). Hardness is then checked to confirm it falls within the range for the specified class.

Pre-heating of around 150°C is normally applied. ASME B31.1 / B31.3 may exempt small fillet welds on thin sections from PWHT; otherwise PWHT in the 680–730°C range is specified. Always follow the governing code and your WPS.
