ASTM A213 T9 Alloy Steel Seamless Tubes

Tubewell Steel & Engg. Co. manufactures, stocks and supplies ASTM A213 T9 tubes, a 9Cr-1Mo ferritic alloy steel. T9 has the highest chromium of the conventional chrome-moly grades, giving excellent resistance to oxidation, sulphidation and hydrogen attack. That makes it a standard choice for refinery furnace tubes and high-temperature exchanger bundles.

Product Overview

Why A213 T9 is specified for the hottest refinery duties

ASTM A213 T9 is a seamless ferritic alloy steel tube containing 8.00–10.00% chromium and 0.90–1.10% molybdenum, with 0.25–1.00% silicon. The high chromium forms a dense, adherent oxide scale that resists high-temperature oxidation and sulphidic corrosion far better than the low-chrome grades. The 1% molybdenum gives good creep resistance, so T9 holds up in furnace coils running at metal temperatures of about 650°C.

Our T9 tubes are hot finished or cold drawn and are full or isothermal annealed, or normalized and tempered at a minimum of 675°C (1250°F), as permitted by A213. Every tube is marked for full traceability. Lots ship with EN 10204 3.1 test certificates, and IBR Form III-A, NACE MR0103 compliance and third-party inspection can be provided on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about A213 T9 tubes

T9 is a 9Cr-1Mo alloy steel with 8.00–10.00% chromium, 0.90–1.10% molybdenum, 0.25–1.00% silicon and a maximum of 0.15% carbon. Phosphorus and sulphur are each limited to 0.025% max.

Both are 9Cr-1Mo steels. T91 is micro-alloyed with vanadium, niobium and nitrogen and is normalized and tempered to a tempered martensitic structure. This gives it a minimum tensile strength of 585 MPa, against 415 MPa for T9, and much higher creep strength. T9 remains the standard choice for refinery corrosion service.

Yes. On request we supply T9 tubes with hardness controlled and verified to NACE MR0103 / MR0175 requirements, with test results reported on the mill certificate.

Yes. Because of its air-hardening tendency, T9 is normally preheated to about 200–300°C, and post-weld heat treatment is carried out in the 700–760°C range per ASME B31.3 / Section I, depending on wall thickness.
