ASTM A335 P22 Alloy Steel Seamless Pipes

Tubewell Steel & Engg. Co. manufactures and stocks ASTM A335 P22 pipes – a 2¼Cr-1Mo ferritic alloy steel with significantly higher creep-rupture strength than P11. P22 is the long-established choice for main steam and hot reheat piping, refinery hydroprocessing units and other high-pressure lines operating up to about 600°C.

Product Overview

Proven creep strength for high-pressure steam and hydrogen lines

ASTM A335 P22 is a seamless ferritic alloy steel pipe with 1.90–2.60% chromium and 0.87–1.13% molybdenum. Doubling the molybdenum level of P11 gives P22 markedly higher creep and stress-rupture strength, allowing thinner walls or higher design temperatures, while the 2.25% chromium content improves resistance to oxidation and high-temperature hydrogen attack. The grade is widely used for continuous service up to about 600°C (1110°F).

P22 pipes are supplied full or isothermal annealed, or normalized and tempered with a minimum tempering temperature of 675°C (1250°F). Tubewell stocks hot-finished and cold-drawn P22 pipes in all popular schedules, complete with heat-number traceability, EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates, IBR Form III-A on request and third-party inspection by BV, TÜV, SGS, Lloyd's or EIL.

  • Higher creep strength than P11 / P12
  • Continuous service up to ≈ 600°C
  • Resistant to high-temperature hydrogen attack
  • Good weldability with controlled PWHT
  • IBR & NACE compliant supply available
  • Ready stock in SCH 40, 80 & 160

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about A335 P22 pipes

P22 contains 1.90–2.60% chromium and 0.87–1.13% molybdenum, with 0.05–0.15% carbon, 0.30–0.60% manganese and silicon limited to 0.50% max. Phosphorus and sulphur are each restricted to 0.025% max.

P91 is a 9Cr-1Mo-V creep strength enhanced steel with a minimum tensile strength of 585 MPa, versus 415 MPa for P22. For new high-temperature steam lines P91 often allows much thinner walls, but P22 remains popular for its simpler welding and heat-treatment requirements and for replacement of existing P22 systems.

The closest European equivalent is 10CrMo9-10 (W.Nr. 1.7380) to EN 10216-2. The Japanese equivalent is JIS G3458 STPA 24 and the British equivalent is BS 3604 HFS 622.

Generally yes. A preheat of about 150–200°C and PWHT in the range of roughly 705–770°C are commonly specified by ASME B31.1 / B31.3, with exemptions only for small, thin-walled joints as permitted by the governing code.
