Product Overview

A high-chromium fitting grade for the most aggressive hot service

ASTM A234 WP9 is a wrought ferritic alloy steel fitting grade with 8.0–10.0% chromium and 0.90–1.10% molybdenum. The 9% chromium level forms a dense, protective oxide that resists scaling, high-temperature sulphidation and naphthenic acid attack far better than lower-chrome grades, while the 1% molybdenum maintains useful creep strength. WP9 is widely used in refinery heater coils, crude and vacuum transfer lines and other sulphur-rich, high-temperature environments.

We supply WP9 fittings in Class 1 and Class 3, annealed or normalized and tempered, as seamless and welded (WPW) elbows, tees, reducers, caps and stub ends. All fittings conform to ASME B16.9 / B16.28 dimensions, are bevelled per ASME B16.25, and come with EN 10204 3.1 certificates and complete heat traceability. 3.2 certification and third-party inspection are available on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about A234 WP9 fittings

WP9 contains 8.0–10.0% chromium and 0.90–1.10% molybdenum, with carbon limited to 0.15% max and silicon to 1.00% max. It is the fitting equivalent of A335 P9 pipe and A182 F9 forgings.

Both are 9Cr-1Mo steels, but WP91 is micro-alloyed with vanadium, niobium and nitrogen and has tightly controlled carbon. This gives WP91 much higher tensile (620 MPa min) and creep strength. WP9 is chosen mainly for corrosion and oxidation resistance in refinery service.

We supply both WP9 Class 1 (415–585 MPa tensile, 205 MPa yield) and Class 3 (485–655 MPa tensile, 275 MPa yield). Chemistry is identical for both classes.

WP9 is an ASME P-No. 5B air-hardening steel. Preheat of around 200°C, controlled interpass temperature and PWHT typically in the 705–760°C range are required by ASME B31.1 / B31.3 to restore toughness and relieve stresses.
